ESA Picks Inmarsat to Develop New ATM Infrastructure in EU, Alitalia First Airline Partner

Through a joint initiative, Inmarsat and the European Space Agency (ESA) will optimise the airspace and airport capacity in Europe, reducing flight times, aircraft fuel burn, and associated CO2 emissions.

Dubbed the Iris Service Evolution program, Inmarsat will head a consortium of more than 30 companies across the aviation industry who will collaborate to develop a technical, commercial and operational roadmap for Europe’s long-term air traffic communications demand.

Alitalia is the official airline partner of the newly created Iris consortium.

41% Rise of Private Ownership at Europe’s Airports, ACI-Europe Reports

The Airports Council International Europe (ACI-Europe) has a released an updated 2016 Ownership report, revealing the dramatic rise of private investment in Europe’s airports since ACI-Europe last issued the report in 2010.

The number of European airports with some share of private ownership has risen to 41% of European airports—205 in all—up from 22% in 2010.

Nearly 39% of these (79 airports) are entirely privately owned, and 61% (126 airports) are variable percentage ’public-private’ ownerships.

Larger airports, which handle close to 75% of Europe’s passenger traffic, have the most private shareholders.

City of Hamburg Invests in the Future of Aerospace with State of the Art Research Centre

The Hanseatic city of Hamburg has invested in the future of aviation by opening a state of the art aeronautical research centre which will foster new technologies to improve the aerospace industry.

The new 26,000 square metre ZAL TechCenter of Applied Aeronautical Research will house up to 600 specialising in fields of research such as fuel cells, aircraft cabin technology, 3D printing, Industry 4.0/Internet of Things (IoT), acoustics, and virtual reality.
