A Pilot’s Life: Captain Anas Amireh

In this special AvGeek series, Flight Chic guest writer Rida Khan has candid conversations with pilots who share their passion for flight and what inspired them to pursue a life in the clouds.

To most people the sky is the limit. To those who love flying, the sky is home. Once you have tasted flight, you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards. There you find your wings. All you have to do is FLY.

    Interview: Captain Anas Amireh, Jordan

Captain Anas Amireh is a 33 year old pilot from Jordan who flies Airbus 320 aircraft. He adores his family, enjoys socialising, and loves to travel to discover the world.

Q: Was becoming a pilot your dream? How did your family support and motivate you as you pursued your passion for flight? Amireh: Becoming a pilot is my ultimate dream. My father is a captain and he is my mentor. I got full support from my mother and my father. They were behind me in every step. Looking at my father wearing the pilot uniform when he headed out for his flights, and flying with him every summer, was a big motivation for me to become a pilot. I decided to be a pilot when I was 5 years old!

Q: What was your first flying experience when you joined the aviation industry?Amireh: My first flight experience was joining my country flag carrier Royal Jordanian Airlines. I was proud to start in such great airline, which offered me this golden chance. I learned a lot from royal Jordanian.

Q: How did you adjust your life schedule being a pilot and having to travel everyday?Amireh: Organising my time, priorities, and tasks is the key factor for adjusting to my life style.

Q: How do you feel during times of festivals or family celebrations when you’re on duty and away from family and friends?Amireh: I used to feel bad during the first days of my career, but now its fine. My family, my friends understand me really well. I believe that I have to do my job, and I was aware of those sacrifices before starting my career. At the end of the day, I make the best of my days..even if I am away from family.

Q: What’s your favourite destination to fly to?Amireh: My favourite place to fly is Amsterdam.

Q: How you manage collaboration with your copilot, as copilots change from flight to flight? Amireh: CRM is the key factor; communication, coordination , understanding the cultures, following the standard procedures and using the standard calls. It will allow any different crew to work together with no issues.

Q: Does putting on your Pilot’s uniform make you feel different?Amireh: When I put on my pilot’s uniform, I feel the responsibility which goes with the job: that I have to maintain the proper image of myself and my airline.

Q: Was there ever a point in your life when you were scared to fly an airplane?Amireh: Any normal person should be scared, to ensure you get to a level where you can react properly and quickly, according to the situation. I got scared in Moscow, during very bad weather conditions on landing, but that fear made me alert, reacting safely and quickly, because I know the consequences.

Q: When finally retire from the pilot life, how do you think you will feel and what will you do next? Amireh: Its too early to answer this question because I am still at the beginning of my career.

Q: Do you have any advice for future pilots?

Amireh: Knowledge is power. Work hard on yourself. Do your best. Keep dreaming. Take the job seriously. It is a serious job, no matter if sometimes it seems smooth and good, but it’s a big responsibility. Develop your skills. Love what you do, and remember nothing is impossible.

After speaking with Captain Anas Amireh, I feel that a great part of what makes him a successful captain is his positive focus in life, no matter what else is going on around him.

He is focused on his past successes rather than his past failures, and on the next actions he needs to take to get closer to achieving his goals. He doesn’t let the distractions that life presents him get in the way.

    1. He is one inspiring guy, whether you are interested in flying in particular or just mastering life. I found his account recently on Instagram and got addicted to daily updates and motivation that comes with them. Great to see a person in love with his job and in love with life, and sharing it with the rest of the world. Good luck, Captain.
