Copenhagen Airport Sees Strong Start to 2024, Over 1.7m Passengers

Copenhagen Airport started 2024 with impressive growth, with over 1.7 million passengers streamed through its gates in January alone. This marks a 7% increase compared to the previous year. Notably, flights to Asia, the Middle East, and North America experienced substantial surges in passenger numbers.

Travelers are flocking to Copenhagen Airport, with 1,712,967 using the hub this January—over 115,000 more than January of last year. Despite winter’s usual travel slump, the airport witnesses a consistent rise in passenger traffic.

“Generally, the winter months are a less busy period for the airport than the summer months, but the appetite for travel clearly continues to grow. January was a good month, with passengers increasingly choosing to fly out of Copenhagen Airport. This is a positive trend, which we are very pleased with,” shares Peter Krogsgaard, Chief Commercial Officer at Copenhagen Airports A/S.

The top destinations in January were London, Oslo, and Stockholm, claiming 17% of the month’s total traffic. Spain followed the UK in popularity, with Malaga emerging as a clear favorite.

Boost in Travel to Asia and the Middle East

Routes to Asia and the Middle East showed stunning growth, with passenger traffic up by 47% and 36%, respectively. Doha, Qatar, has risen to the top ten destinations from Copenhagen—for the first time. Doha’s route saw nearly 40,000 passengers in January alone, a 58% jump over last year.

Krogsgaard says, “We are seeing a massive increase in the number of travelers to the Middle East. Doha plays a big part in this, but Abu Dhabi and Dubai, serviced by Etihad Airways and Emirates, are also performing very well indeed. The Middle Eastern destinations offer lots of sun and heat for winter-weary Scandinavians, but some passengers use them as a layover en route to Asian, African, and Australian destinations.”

Though direct flights to Asia are growing, they still trail behind pre-pandemic numbers. Sixty percent of past passenger levels have returned on these routes. “Thailand is hugely popular during the winter months. Many Scandinavians are attracted to the pleasant climate, many exotic destinations, and exciting adventures on offer. In fact, we are back at the pre-pandemic passenger numbers – and the majority of passengers choose to travel to Bangkok, serviced by SAS and Thai Airways,” says Krogsgaard.

High Passenger Volume Expected At Copenhagen Airport During 2024 Winter Break

Expect a bustling airport in weeks 7 and 8, as Danes and southern Swedes take off for winter holidays. Over 1 million passengers will travel through Copenhagen Airport during this period, with Fridays and Sundays being the peak travel days.

“The many holidaymakers in the terminals are brimming with expectation. We do everything we can to give our passengers a good send-off, from check-in and security to our many shops and restaurants in the terminals, which stand ready to receive the many customers,” Krogsgaard concludes.

The trend indicates a preference for snowy retreats to the Alps or sunny getaways to Thailand, with Spain as the top choice for warm-weather escapes.
