VINCI Airports has announced a comprehensive £100 million investment plan to improve operational efficiency at Belfast International Airport. Projects aim to enhance the passenger experience and boost environmental performance. This five-year initiative will reshape the airport’s infrastructure and offerings.

£25 million for State-of-the-Art Security Building

The plan’s first phase is already in progress. Construction of a state-of-the-art security building adjacent to the existing terminal is underway. With a budgetary allocation £25 million, this advanced facility will revolutionize the screening process. By incorporating Standard 3 X-ray equipment, passengers will no longer have to remove liquids or electronics from their bags. The new building is scheduled to be operational by the summer of 2024.

Improvements to the Departure Area

As part of the investment plan, Belfast International Airport will also witness a revamp of its current facilities. That includes improvements to the airside departure area. Additional departure gates and more seating options will be added to enhance convenience for travelers. Moreover, the airport’s shopping landscape will be transformed with enticing new catering and retail outlets. To accommodate growing demands, the Border Force area will also be expanded over the course of the next five years.

A 22% Increase in Passenger Numbers

These strategic investments will streamline operations, elevate service quality, and solidify Belfast International Airport’s position as a key passenger gateway. The airport has already witnessed a remarkable surge in traffic. VINCI reports a 22% increase in passenger numbers since January, surpassing the 4.5 million mark. The investment plan could generate approximately 400 jobs within the local construction industry in line with this growth trajectory.

Prioritizing Sustainability at Belfast International Airport

Emphasizing their commitment to sustainability, VINCI Airports has announced the launch of a cutting-edge solar farm on the airport premises. Boasting a capacity of 26 MWp, this solar farm will generate 22.4 MWh of electricity injected directly into the grid. Doing so will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 12,500 tonnes annually. VINCI Concessions’ subsidiary, SunMind, will spearhead this eco-friendly project’s development, financing, construction, and operation. This environmentally conscious venture aligns with VINCI Airports’ global action plan. It aims to achieve a 50% reduction in emissions by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050, contributing to the overall decarbonization of its communities.

Since its inclusion in the VINCI Airports network in 2018, Belfast International Airport has made significant strides. The airport reduced its emissions (scope 1 and 2) by an impressive 44% by implementing VINCI Airports’ environmentally focused solutions.

Combining state-of-the-art facilities, optimized operations, and sustainable initiatives, Belfast International Airport will offer an elevated and eco-friendly travel experience for its growing number of passengers.

Nicolas Notebaert, CEO of VINCI Concessions & President of VINCI Airports declared: “VINCI Airports’ investment will support Belfast international airport’s positive dynamic by strongly improving the passenger experience. The airport plays a pivotal role for aviation, tourism and the wider local economy. As a long-term partner, VINCI Airports is committed to sustainably develop the airport and increase its environmental performance”.
