Breeze Airways Expands its Fleet with 10 More Airbus A220 Jets

Breeze Airways has announced a significant purchase of an additional ten Airbus A220 aircraft. This brings the airline’s total firm order for the aircraft type to 90, making Breeze the third largest customer worldwide for the A220. The airline has also set ambitious plans to switch all its commercial flights to the A220 by the end of 2024.

“Thanks to its world-class performance capabilities, the A220 is the perfect aircraft to help Breeze achieve its goal to provide nonstop service between underserved routes across the United States,” said Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, EVP Sales, Commercial Aircraft, Airbus. “The aircraft offers efficient operations and an outstanding passenger experience, all while operating with the world’s lowest small single-aisle carbon footprint and a lower noise footprint in the communities where it flies. This additional order from Breeze is a strong endorsement for the value and opportunities offered by this latest generation aircraft.”

December 2021 marked a milestone for Breeze when it welcomed its first A220. Fast forward to January 2024, and Breeze operates 20 of these jets, with a whole fleet transition on the horizon.

Advantages of the A220

The Airbus A220 offers passengers a comfortable cabin experience. It also cuts airlines’ operating costs and reduces environmental harm. Capable of flying non-stop for 3,600 nautical miles—or 6,700 kilometers—the A220 touts a fuel and CO2 emissions reduction of 25% per seat compared to older planes. Its design—featuring advanced aerodynamics, innovative materials, and Pratt & Whitney’s newest GTF™ engines—slashes noise levels by half and NOx emissions by 40% below the industry norm. The A220 can fly using up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), which Airbus aims to boost to 100% by 2030.

The A220 has proven its versatility with more than 300 planes delivered to 20 airlines, touching down on five continents and joining the fleets in regions like Oceania. Over 100 million passengers have experienced the A220, which now serves 1,350 routes to over 400 destinations globally. As of early 2024, about 30 customers have placed orders for over 900 A220s, securing the model’s lead in the small single-aisle market.
