Bare, Lufthansa’s 1st Boeing 777-9 Takes Flight With Full Allegris Interior Installed

The Boeing Company has flown the first customer-configured Boeing 777-9 destined for Lufthansa. The flight marks the first time the delayed widebody has taken to the air equipped with a full passenger interior.

The aircraft completed its maiden flight on May 7 from Paine Field in Everett, Washington. It flew for approximately three hours and 27 minutes over Washington and Oregon before returning to Boeing Field. Boeing said the aircraft will now enter a series of cabin and systems tests ahead of certification and delivery.

“This airplane represents the next generation of the 777 family,” Boeing said in its announcement, adding that the flight marked “the first 777-9 with a full customer interior.”

According to Boeing, the aircraft is the first production 777-9 fitted with Lufthansa’s complete passenger cabin, rather than a test interior or partially equipped configuration typically used during development flights.

The milestone is significant for Boeing’s long-delayed 777X program, and for Lufthansa’s rollout of its next-generation Allegris cabin concept. Lufthansa has already introduced elements of Allegris aboard Airbus A350s and Boeing 787 Dreamliners. However, the 777-9 would be the flagship aircraft for the airline’s full long-haul interior strategy.

A Smooth First Flight For A Long-Awaited New Aircraft

Boeing pilots Capt. Ted Grady and Capt. Jake Miller performed the first flight designed to test the airplane’s systems and structures, with systems operators Zach Lewis and Joel Conard, flight analysts Cody Bruinsma, Mike Deutsch and Carl Zietz, and engineers Ben Wolter and Scott Dailey onboard.

“The airplane performed as we expected,” said Grady, 777/777X chief pilot. “The 777-9 continues to handle beautifully. Thank you to everyone who worked to get the airplane ready for this flight and its next phase of testing.”

A Flying Showcase For Lufthansa Allegris

Lufthansa has not yet released a detailed cabin layout of its new Boeing 777-9 Allegris interiors. However, the airline has revealed the broader design language and seating concepts that will appear onboard through its Allegris program.

The carrier has described Allegris as its largest premium product overhaul in decades. It introduces new cabins across First Class, Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy.

The 777-9 would be the first Lufthansa aircraft designed around the full Allegris concept from first delivery, rather than retrofitted later.

Lufthansa Allegris First Class

The Boeing 777-9 is expected to feature Lufthansa’s newest Allegris First Class suites. That includes the “Suite Plus” double suite concept with floor-to-ceiling privacy doors and a shared bed configuration.

  • First Class Suites feature a personal wardrobe, large dining table, screens across the full width of the suite, heated and cooled seats, shoulder sink-in, wireless charging module and over-ear headphones from Sennheiser.
  • The First Class Suite Plus is as private as a hotel room, expressly designed for couples, with room for two passengers and a double bed.

Lufthansa Allegris Business Class

The aircraft would feature multiple Business Class seat types giving passengers options to suit their privacy, workspace, or companion travel preferences.

  • Five seat options (including an extra-long bed, more personal space or a double seat), seat heating and cooling, shoulder sink-in, wireless charging module and a personal minibar in the suite.
  • Passenger devices (mobile devices, wireless headphones) can connect to the in-flight entertainment system via Bluetooth.
  • Lufthansa’s five Business Class seating options:
    • 1) Suites in the first row. Double suite on the inside, single suites by the window.
    • 2) Extra-Space-Seat: Unique, spacious single seat with extra work surface.
    • 3) Window seat with a high degree of privacy.
    • 4) Seat with extra-long bed (2.20 meters).
    • 5) Classic Business Class seat: The aisle is directly accessible from all seats.

Lufthansa faced certification delays introducing some Allegris Business Class seats on the Boeing 787. The complexity of multiple seat variants complicated the regulatory approval processes.

Boeing said the new 777-9 aircraft will undergo additional testing focused on cabin systems and operational readiness before entering commercial service.

A Bare Flight With Lufthansa Livery Coming Soon

The airplane rolled out from the Everett factory wearing only a clear top coat to protect the structure. It completed fueling, engine runs and taxi tests before the flight.

Engineering ship captain, Sam Damico, supported the production and test teams as they prepared the airplane for its first flight.

“We’re taking part in something really significant for the company,” Damico said. “There’s a lot of pride from everyone who helped bring all of these pieces together, working late nights and weekends, so this airplane can go and do its mission.”

Boeing will paint the aircraft with a full Lufthansa livery before delivery.

A major milestone for Boeing’s 777X program

The first flight also represents another step forward for Boeing’s 777X program, which has faced years of delays tied to certification requirements, engineering scrutiny, and supply chain challenges.

The 777-9 is the largest member of the 777X family. It features new composite wings with folding wingtips and updated General Electric GE9X engines. The aircraft offers improved fuel efficiency compared with earlier Boeing 777 variants.

Boeing has said the aircraft is designed to reduce fuel use and emissions while offering increased passenger capacity and range for long-haul routes.

“Our team continues to face into the challenges of bringing a new airplane to market, and preparing to begin certification testing on this 777-9 is one more example of our progress,” said Terry Beezhold, 777-9 vice president and program manager. “I’m grateful to our team whose skill and dedication will help us deliver this airplane and to Lufthansa and all of our customers for choosing the 777X family.”

Lufthansa is the launch customer for the 777-9. It will be the first airline to place the aircraft into commercial service once certification is complete.

The carrier has ordered 27 Boeing 777-9 aircraft as part of its long-haul fleet renewal strategy.

For Lufthansa, the aircraft will also become one of the airline’s most visible premium products as it competes with Gulf carriers and other global airlines investing heavily in next-generation premium cabins.
