Budapest Airport has been crowned the Overall Winner at the Routes Europe 2024 Awards and triumphed in the 5-20 Million Passenger category.

Overall Winner: Budapest Airport

Budapest Airport utilizes effective airline marketing strategies that significantly contribute to its success. Through creative social media engagements, it attracts a wide range of passenger demographics and promotes the destination’s charm. In 2023, the airport served 14.7 million passengers, achieving 91% of its pre-pandemic traffic levels. It also expanded its nonstop flight capacity by over 30% to critical markets like China, the Middle East, and North Africa.

Albrecht Dürer Airport Nuremberg Wins In Under 5 Million Passenger Category

Albrecht Dürer Airport Nuremberg in Germany won the Under 5 Million Passengers category due to its considerable growth in 2023. It now serves 65 destinations, with 16 new routes added and an increased schedule frequency since 2019.

Athens International Airport Wins In +20 Million Passenger Category

In 2023, Athens International Airport set a new record by handling over 28 million passengers and added 39 new destinations. The growth was supported by 19 new airlines and 68 extra services on existing routes, primarily fueled by increased traffic from Western Europe and North America.

Turismo de Portugal Wins Destination Award

In the Destination category, Turismo de Portugal was recognized for its effective partnerships with airport and airline partners. These collaborations included multichannel marketing campaigns that promoted new routes, contributing to the launch of 30 new destinations in the 2024 summer schedule and achieving record-breaking passenger levels in 2023.

Miguel Moraes, Head of Trade Relations at Turismo de Portugal, said: “It recognises the effort we have been developing in the last decade, working closely with our partner airlines to deliver sustainable routes to our destinations. Tenerife, Spain – September 22, 2022: Jet2 Boeing 737-800 airplane at Tenerife South airport (TFS) in Spain. won the Airline category and expanded significantly in 2023, increasing seat capacity by over 7%. It added new routes, grew its fleet, and introduced Liverpool John Lennon Airport services. During the summer of 2024, the airline plans to launch almost 40 new routes from various UK airports.
