Cathay Pacific is hiring in the Chinese Mainland, focusing on diversity and inclusion. With its solid base in Hong Kong and substantial support from the Chinese Mainland, Cathay Pacific leverages its global connectivity to its advantage. The airline recently started its latest recruitment drive at Shenzhen’s influential Qianhai International Talent Hub. This well-planned move underscores Cathay Pacific’s aim to cultivate a diversified and inclusive team, taking advantage of the airline’s Hong Kong establishment, the backing from the Chinese Mainland, and its worldwide connections.
A Key Milestone in Recruitment for Cathay Pacific

This recruitment event marks a significant milestone for Cathay Pacific—it is the first time the airline is recruiting cabin crew from the Chinese Mainland. This initiative comes at a time of rising flight numbers, increased business activities, frequent exchanges between Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland, and a growing patronage of Putonghua-speaking customers. This new recruitment effort demonstrates the importance the airline places on the Chinese Mainland market.
At the event, Cathay Group’s CEO, Ronald Lam, stated: “As we continue our journey since the pandemic of rebuilding Cathay better than before, we are committed to supporting the 14th Five-Year Plan and integrating into the national development. Cathay Pacific has been enhancing connectivity between Hong Kong, the Chinese Mainland and the rest of the world by leveraging the advantages of its strategic base in Hong Kong together with the support received from the Chinese Mainland. We will continue to strengthen our presence in, and attract talent from, the Chinese Mainland in response to the increasing number of Putonghua-speaking customers, while building a diverse and inclusive Cathay family. The Cathay Group plans to recruit around 4,000 people in the Chinese Mainland by 2025.“
“2023 Chinese Mainland Talent Recruitment Plan”
In 2023, Cathay Pacific initiated the “Chinese Mainland Talent Recruitment Plan,” to recruit 200-300 cabin crew from the Chinese Mainland. It further aims to hire 1,000-2,000 personnel by 2025. This plan signifies that hiring activities in the Chinese Mainland will become a regular feature of Cathay Pacific’s recruitment strategy. The airline envisions the Chinese Mainland will form its largest cabin crew community outside of Hong Kong. In addition, the airline plans to provide more job opportunities for Chinese Mainland talent. Career opportunities include cadet pilots, cabin crew, IT professionals, ground employees, and customer service officers. The airline intends to foster aviation talent to support industry development.
Cathay Recruitment: Promoting Diversity and Inclusion
Mandy Ng, Cathay’s Director of Service Delivery, also attended the recruitment event. She stated: “We will continue our recruitment in the Chinese Mainland, building a diverse and inclusive team and providing excellent and caring service to our customers. Through enhanced communication and collaboration between the Chinese Mainland and Hong Kong, we can further facilitate the flow of talent within the Greater Bay Area.”
The recruitment event occurs from August 25 to 30, 2023, at the Qianhai International Talent Hub in Shenzhen. Applicants will undergo initial assessments, and successful candidates will advance to on-site interviews. Post-selection, the recruits would receive comprehensive induction training and would be based in Hong Kong.
Starting October 2023, Cathay Pacific will operate over 160 return flights per week to 16 airports in 15 cities in the Chinese Mainland, linking it and Hong Kong with the rest of the world. The airline is also committed to offering various intermodal services, including air, sea, and land options, to enable travelers from the Greater Bay Area to connect to the world through Cathay Pacific flights more seamlessly.
