During the festive season, many people travel, and SWISS has seen a boost in the number of passengers. The airline happily reports that it served 546,961 travelers during this time.
Despite challenges like bad weather and staff absences, SWISS flights were almost 99% as scheduled. From December 22, 2023, to January 2, 2024, SWISS transported 546,961 passengers. The airline improved schedule stability compared to the previous year with 98.5% of flights operating as planned.
“I am delighted that we achieved our objective and were able to almost always maintain our schedules, even over the busy Christmas days,” says SWISS Head of Operations Oliver Buchhofer. “As a result, we were able to get so many of our customers reliably to their family and friends to enjoy the holidays together. Just like the busy summer holiday season, this is always quite a challenge. But, thanks to the excellent and exceptional work and dedication of all our people at SWISS, it’s one that we were able to meet and master once again.”
Delays Due to Snow, Wind, and Sickness-related Absences
While SWISS ran most of its flights as planned during Christmas, there were some delays. Additionally, 58 flights were canceled in the final two weeks.
- 17 percent of SWISS flights experienced delays of over 30 minutes upon arrival.
- 58 percent of departures were on time, taking off within 15 minutes of the scheduled time.
- Most delays happened at the airport before takeoff; some were made up during the flight.
“The weather proved a particular challenge,” Oliver Buchhofer explains. “Strong winds, frost and snow hampered our flight operations – severely in some cases – and we did experience delays. Also, like the rest of Switzerland, we had our fair share of a wave of colds and flu, and a number of our people had to call in sick. So I’d like to say an even bigger thank-you to all our employees and our partners who did so much for our passengers over the past two weeks, in the air and on the ground.”
SWISS Passengers Benefit From Punctuality Initiatives
SWISS prioritized performing as many scheduled services as possible during Christmas and New Year. Ensuring passengers reached their destinations reliably during the festive season was crucial to avoid passengers missing time with their loved ones. Last summer, SWISS announced initiatives to improve flight punctuality significantly.
