2024 Crystal Cabin Award Winners

A jury of 28 industry experts selected the eight most innovative products. These products showcased advancements in connectivity, comfort, sustainability, and accessibility in air travel.

“This year’s submissions included many outstanding innovations that set new standards for the passenger experience by better recognising and responding to the individual needs of passengers – across all ticket classes,” commented Ralf Gust, President of the Crystal Cabin Awards Association. “The Crystal Cabin Awards 2024 have once again shown that innovation in the aviation industry continues unabated. It is impressive to see so many creative solutions developed to make travelling more comfortable, safer and more environmentally friendly. We are proud to recognise these ground-breaking developments and look forward to seeing the impact these innovations will have on the future of flying,” continued Gust.

Winner Cabin Concepts: Factorydesign, Coop. BermudAir “The BermudAir Aisle Class Suite”

2024 Crystal Cabin Award Winners

The BermudAir Aisle Class Suite offers a business class seat for single-aisle aircraft on routes between the USA and Bermuda. BermudAir achieves this by converting 2-2 economy seats into 1-1 suites. This approach reutilizes over 70% of existing seats, making it both cost-efficient and sustainable. It also enhances comfort and provides more storage space.

Winner Material and Components: Collins Aerospace “STARLight”

2024 Crystal Cabin Award Winners

STARLight by Collins Aerospace combines advanced composite designs, robotic manufacturing, and sustainable materials. This structural technology reduces aircraft component weight and manufacturing costs. It enables airlines to design cabin spaces efficiently without adding extra weight. STARLight also provides improved thermal and acoustic insulation.

Winner Cabin Systems: Safran Cabin “theCUBE”

Safran Cube

Safran’s galley waste disposal unit, theCUBE, integrates easily into unused galley spaces. It flushes automatically when the door closes, simplifying operation for cabin crew. Its plug-and-play design and standard ARINC rail make theCUBE convenient to install and maintain. TheCUBE uses 30% less water per flush than traditional units. An automatic UV light controls odors and prevents bacteria, making it an efficient and hygienic waste disposal solution.

Winner Health & Safety: Accenture GmbH “Accenture PED safety bag”

2024 Crystal Cabin Award Winners

Lithium-Ion battery fires significantly risk flight safety. The Accenture Personal Electronic Device (PED) safety bag, the first to meet UL 5800 Performance Level 1, contains fire, smoke, and gases from lithium battery failure. This bag offers dual protection: the inner bag resists flames and heat, while the outer bag prevents smoke penetration. It maintains an outer temperature below 85°C, allowing an aircraft to fly safely for up to six hours with a burning PED.

Winner Passenger Comfort: Diehl Aviation, Coop. Qantas Airways Ltd “The Wellbeing Zone”

Diehl Aviation Qantas A350-1000 Wellbeing-zone

Qantas’ Project Sunrise aims to revolutionize the historic Kangaroo route by offering non-stop flights from Sydney to London and New York in under a day. These ultra-long-haul flights prioritize passenger comfort and health. They feature an innovative Wellbeing Zone equipped with wellness products, optimized lighting, healthy eating options, and space for physical activity. Many praise the Wellbeing Zone’s refreshing approach to enhancing comfort on long flights.

Winner IFEC and Digital Services: Thales Avionics “FlytEdge”

Thales Avionics’ FlytEdge, the first cloud-based, natively digital in-flight entertainment solution, allows airlines to integrate web applications, including streaming services, quickly. This system supports remote operation and updates, giving airlines full autonomy and enabling continuous evolution. FlytEdge uses edge caching and cross-content recommendations to optimize operations and enhance the passenger experience.

Winner Sustainable Cabin: Diehl Aviation “ECO Sidewall”

Diehl Aviation’s ECO Sidewall offers an eco-efficient solution for aviation. It reduces weight by 10%, cutting CO2 emissions by 19% during production and 10% during operation. Advanced technology also decreases prepreg blank waste by over a third. This sustainable innovation won the Crystal Cabin Award 2024.

University winners: Tongji University, Coop. Dupont “Flexifold”

The Crystal Cabin Awards’ “University” category celebrates innovative designs. This year, a team from Tongji University in Shanghai won with their “Flexifold” concept. Their economy seat offers flexibility and new revenue opportunities for airlines. The seat uses a folding and snapping mechanism for efficient body support. It combines lightweight comfort with customizable privacy, a recline angle, and an attachable footrest.
