How to Connect AirPods Pro to United Airlines Seatback Screens
Flying United with Apple AirPods Pro? Here’s how to connect your wireless earbuds to the airline’s Bluetooth-enabled entertainment screens, use noise cancellation and make conversations with cabin crew easier.

United Airlines passengers can connect Apple AirPods Pro and other Bluetooth headphones directly to seatback entertainment screens on aircraft equipped with the airline’s newer cabin interiors.
The feature lets passengers watch movies, listen to music and enjoy other onboard entertainment without wired headphones or a separate Bluetooth adapter.
United has been expanding the technology across its fleet. In June 2025, the airline announced that more than 680 aircraft had Bluetooth-enabled 4K entertainment screens.
The airline’s 2026 fleet update reported that more than 530 new and retrofitted aircraft featured its signature interior, which includes seatback screens and Bluetooth connectivity.
How to pair AirPods Pro with United’s seatback screens
United’s Bluetooth-enabled screens allow passengers to connect their own wireless headphones. Here’s how to pair your AirPods Pro:
- Open the Bluetooth menu. Find the Bluetooth icon in the toolbar near the bottom of your seatback entertainment screen.
- Turn on Bluetooth. Select the option to connect wireless headphones.
- Disconnect your AirPods from other devices. If they’re already connected to your iPhone, iPad or Mac, temporarily disconnect them.
- Put your AirPods into pairing mode. For AirPods Pro 1 or 2, open the charging case with the earbuds inside and hold the setup button until the status light flashes white. AirPods Pro 3 use the case’s front touch-control pairing method.
- Select your AirPods. When they appear on the seatback screen’s list of available Bluetooth devices, tap to connect.
- Start watching. Once connected, the sound from United’s entertainment system should play through your AirPods.
United originally demonstrated the process in its October 2023 announcement.
What if your AirPods won’t connect?
If your AirPods don’t appear in the available devices list, check that they aren’t still connected to your phone or another nearby device.
Try turning Bluetooth off and on again using the seatback screen, then return your AirPods to pairing mode.
If the connection drops, check the battery level and reconnect through the screen’s Bluetooth menu.
Not every United aircraft has Bluetooth-enabled seatback entertainment. Older cabins may still require wired headphones or a compatible Bluetooth transmitter connected to the headphone socket.
Use AirPods Pro noise cancellation during your flight
AirPods Pro can make flying more comfortable by reducing background cabin noise.
Active Noise Cancellation helps reduce the steady sound of engines, airflow and other background noise. It can make movies, music and podcasts easier to hear without turning the volume up unnecessarily.
Passengers can switch between listening modes using their AirPods controls or a connected Apple device.
Noise Cancellation is useful when you want to concentrate on a movie or relax.
Transparency mode allows more outside sound through, making it easier to hear people nearby.
Adaptive Audio, available on AirPods Pro 2 and Pro 3, automatically adjusts the balance between noise cancellation and environmental awareness.

Remember that noise cancellation is not a substitute for paying attention to cabin crew instructions or safety announcements.
Conversation Awareness makes it easier to speak with cabin crew
One of the most useful AirPods Pro features for flying is Conversation Awareness.
Available on AirPods Pro 2 and Pro 3, it automatically lowers media volume when the wearer starts speaking and enhances voices in front of them.
That means passengers can speak to a flight attendant when ordering food or drinks without manually stopping their entertainment.
United highlighted this feature when it introduced its Bluetooth-enabled cabins in 2023.
“United was the first U.S. airline to roll out Bluetooth, and when we saw Apple’s new AirPods features, we knew it could be a game changer for our customers and our employees,” said Jason Birnbaum, United’s Chief Information Officer at the time.
“People want to stay connected while they’re in the air, but there’s also a lot of interactions between our crew and customers – the technological combination of wireless connectivity, Conversation Awareness, and Adaptive Audio result in a great experience for everyone.”
To enable Conversation Awareness, open your AirPods settings on your iPhone and select the feature. It can also be controlled through Control Centre.
There is one important distinction: Conversation Awareness responds when you start speaking. It does not necessarily lower your entertainment volume simply because a flight attendant speaks to you first.
For that reason, Transparency mode or removing an earbud may be more reliable when listening to crew instructions.
Which United Airlines aircraft support Bluetooth headphones?
United has introduced Bluetooth-enabled entertainment screens on new and retrofitted aircraft as part of its United Next cabin programme.
These include newer Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus A321neo interiors, along with selected widebody aircraft.
The airline is also incorporating Bluetooth into its latest long-haul cabins. Its United Elevated Boeing 787-9 interior includes Bluetooth-enabled screens across Economy, Premium Plus and Polaris.
However, Bluetooth availability depends on the individual aircraft and cabin configuration, not simply the aircraft model.
Passengers should not assume every United flight offers wireless headphone connectivity.
Can you use AirPods Pro on United flights without Bluetooth screens?
Yes, but how you use them depends on the entertainment system.
If your aircraft offers United’s personal-device entertainment, you can watch supported content on your iPhone, iPad or another compatible device and listen through AirPods paired directly with that device.

If your aircraft has a seatback screen but no Bluetooth connectivity, you will generally need wired headphones or a compatible Bluetooth audio transmitter.
A Bluetooth transmitter plugs into the aircraft’s headphone socket and sends audio wirelessly to your AirPods. Check the connector type before travelling, as aircraft entertainment systems can use different headphone sockets.
Are AirPods Pro worth using on United flights?
For passengers who already own AirPods Pro, United’s Bluetooth-enabled screens offer a convenient way to enjoy onboard entertainment.
Noise cancellation can help reduce background cabin noise, while Transparency mode and Conversation Awareness make it easier to interact with other passengers and cabin crew.
The main limitation is aircraft compatibility. United continues to modernise its entertainment systems, but Bluetooth availability is not yet universal across its fleet.
If you plan to use AirPods Pro throughout your journey, charge them before boarding and bring a backup listening option if your aircraft does not support Bluetooth.
The combination of wireless connectivity and improved noise control is a useful example of how personal technology and aircraft cabin design are coming together to make flying more comfortable.

- United Airlines has also introduced Live Activities support for the United app on iPhones. This feature gives users timely flight updates. Important flight details appear on the Lock Screen or the Dynamic Island on their Home Screen. United Airlines was the first US airline to provide these convenient and user-friendly features.
Other Technology and Passenger Experience Enhancements on United’s Planes
United Airlines has introduced various enhancements to its new and retrofitted planes. These include Bluetooth connectivity, seatback screens for every seat, spacious overhead compartments, and fast Wi-Fi on narrowbody aircraft.
United Polaris® business class offers individual pods with lie-flat seats and 16-inch seatback screens for widebody planes.
To further improve the passenger experience, United has also partnered with Therabody and Saks Fifth Avenue to provide business-class amenity products.
