The Intriguing Sculpture of Fred Eversley

As you drive into Miami International Airport (MIA), a 35-foot stainless-steel sculpture welcomes you. This remarkable art piece, Parabolic Flight, is a testament to African American creativity. Fred Eversley, an artist with roots in aerospace engineering, designed it in 1980. It serves as a landmark in Miami’s commitment to public art.

Eversley’s sculpture draws on his engineering background. He built a career at NASA, contributing to the Gemini and Apollo missions. However, at 25, he turned his talents to art. His pioneering efforts led him to become the Smithsonian Institution’s first artist-in-residence at the Air and Space Museum. Both his art and his story continue to inspire.

Parabolic Flight does more than just catch the eye; it captures wind energy. The sculpture rotates and powers a neon light, creating a visually striking experience for everyone passing by. It’s a significant piece within the Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places collection. This program gets backing from local authorities, including the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Board of County Commissioners.

Cornelius Tulloch’s Homage to Heritage and Home at Miami International Airport Concourse D

Step inside Concourse D, the bustling hub of MIA, and discover a photography exhibit that speaks to the soul. Genesis, by Miami’s own Cornelius Tulloch, celebrates African American and Caribbean life in the warmth of domesticity. Through 14 intimate photographs, Tulloch invites viewers into tender scenes that reflect family and community amidst challenging times.

Created during the 2020-2021 pandemic, Genesis came to life in Tulloch’s childhood home. Here, he combined his art, design, and architecture expertise to craft a narrative that unfolds within the frames. Each photograph is a stage where lighting and structure stir emotions, turning everyday settings into surreal canvases.

Tulloch’s exploration of Black life goes beyond the images. He draws from his Jamaican and African American roots and his Miami upbringing. His perspective on identity, culture, and the spaces we inhabit has reached audiences far and wide, from the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., to the MAXXI Museum in Rome. Genesis first took shape with support from a 2020 Ellies Creator Award and was presented by Oolite Art.
