Finnair Cancels 550 Flights Due to Strike: What You Need To Know

Travel plans for thousands of passengers are being disrupted as Finnair, the largest airline in Finland, is set to cancel an estimated 550 flights on the 1st and 2nd of February, 2024. This massive cancellation comes is due to a widespread political strike across Finland, severely affecting operations at Helsinki Airport.

The strike, announced by several employee unions, is in protest against the policies of the Finnish Government. As it coincides with Finnair’s peak operations, the airline expects to scrap the bulk of its flights—typically about 280 flights daily—except for a select few.

Finnair has taken measures to inform passengers with bookings on the few flights still scheduled to operate during the strike period. For those travelers whose flights are being canceled, the airline is introducing alternative routing solutions and is already reaching out to offer rebookings on other available flights, including those of partner airlines.

Starting January 30, Finnair will systematically process cancellations and communicate rerouting options to its customers. The airline aims to minimize disruptions, particularly for long-haul passengers, by providing direct flights to final destinations, bypassing Helsinki, where connections are unavailable.

Passengers should be prepared for potential delays and limited onboard services, such as food and beverage, as ground handling services will also be impacted during the strike days.

Finnair aims to complete the handling of cancellations and customer rerouting within a two-day period, mitigating the inconvenience caused by the strike. Passengers planning travels with Finnair during these dates should stay updated through the airline’s official channels.

Finnair Customer Service Team Is Busy

Finnair’s Jari Paajanen, Vice President of Operation Control Center, stated, “We have already given customers the opportunity to change their travel dates on Finnair flights. From January 30 onwards, we start rerouting customers, using also other airlines’ flights.”

“We will do our very best to offer a suitable flight option to as many customers as possible, but the number of alternative flights is limited,” said Paajanen. “We ask customers to kindly wait for the rerouting from us, as our customer service team is busier than usual and queue times can be long.”

“It is unfortunate that the political strike will affect so many customers’ travel. We will work in close collaboration with our partners to ensure that after the strike, our flight operations can again commence as smoothly as possible,” Paajanen concluded.

Travel Flexibility Amidst Finnair Strike Dates: Change or Cancel Your Flights with Ease

  • Self-Service for Eligible Tickets:
    If your ticket allows changes, modifying your travel dates is effortless. Visit the Finnair website and access the Manage Booking service to update your itinerary.
  • Assistance for Restricted Tickets:
    Even if you hold tickets with no/self-service change option, Finnair has you covered. Contact the travel agency where you booked your ticket or contact Finnair’s customer service for a cost-free alteration to your travel dates.

If adjusting your trip schedule is not viable, Finnair provides the option to cancel your booking. You can claim a refund for the unused part of the ticket.

  • Direct Purchasers:
    If you purchased your ticket directly from Finnair, initiating a cancellation is straightforward. You can handle this process on Finnair’s website under Manage Booking or by contacting Finnair customer service for assistance.
  • Third-Party Bookings:
    For tickets booked through a travel agency, please coordinate with them for your cancellation and refund process.

Finnair has made these options available to ensure your travel plans remain flexible, even in the face of unexpected strikes. They have contacted all customers with reservations during the strike period to communicate these options.
