Really Huge! Changi Airport Builds Singapore’s Largest Rooftop Solar Project

Singapore’s Changi Airport is building on its sustainability initiatives by launching a project to build a rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system. Partnering with Keppel Ltd., this venture is slated for completion in early 2025 and is poised to be the largest of its kind in Singapore.

Solar Power to Transform Changi Airport

Advancing green energy, the project will see a 43 Mega-Watt peak (MWp) system span across various airport rooftops and a section of the airfield. That is a sufficient energy supply to power over 10,000 local residences. It promises to slash carbon emissions by an estimated 20,000 tonnes yearly—translating to a 10% reduction from 2019 figures.

Deploying solar panels at airports presents unique challenges compared to standard installations. It requires comprehensive simulations. The airport must prevent panel glare from impacting pilots and air traffic controllers and avoid interference with communications and signals. Additionally, the installation and upkeep of solar PV systems must adhere to aviation safety and security standards. That includes the fire safety codes of the Singapore Civil Defence Force.

Mr Koh Ming Sue, CAG’s Executive Vice President of Engineering and Development, explained the project will help CAG overcome Singapore’s limitations with renewable energy sources. “CAG strives to make Changi a more sustainable aviation hub by reducing carbon footprint from all practical fronts,” he said. “We have been addressing the airport’s energy demands at its core.”

Changi Airport is enhancing its infrastructure and systems for energy efficiency. That includes upgrades to their frontline airport buildings and adopting clean energy vehicles for the airport community. Changi’s solar PV system project significantly advances its decarbonization efforts.

“In parallel, at the back end, CAG has also appointed another partner, SolarGy Pte Ltd, to transform our airport maintenance and storage center into a greener facility by installing a 640kWp rooftop solar PV system, which will cut the facility’s emissions by around 50%. As technology continues to advance, we look forward to working with innovative partners to further unlock solar potential and other sustainable opportunities at Changi Airport,” Mr Koh Ming Sue concluded.

Innovative Solutions Ensure Safety and Efficiency

Meeting the airport’s operational safety, glare-free simulations, and thorough testing have ensured that pilots and air traffic operations remain unaffected. Keppel’s Operations Nerve Centre will serve as the management heart for this mammoth installation. It will offer real-time system monitoring and intelligent maintenance for optimal performance.

“When completed, this 43MWp landmark solar project will contribute significantly to making the Changi air hub greener and a testament to Keppel’s capabilities and innovation,” noted Mr Lim Yong Wei of Keppel’s Infrastructure Division.

A Bold Step Forward for Changi Airport

This advancement in sustainability opens a new chapter for Changi, reinforcing its commitment to green energy and cutting-edge solutions. With energy-efficient upgrades and support for clean energy vehicles, Changi Airport aligns itself with sustainable targets for global aviation.
