Swedavia, the Swedish airport operator, begins 2024 with stable passenger traffic across its network. The company’s ten airports efficiently handled nearly 2.1 million passengers in January. This figure matches passenger numbers from last January.
Swedavia January 2024 Traffic Insights
While January is a typically slow month, trends for international travel, specifically towards European destinations, appear robust. However, domestic travel demand continued to be weak.
International travelers rose by 2% to 1.5 million, while domestic traffic saw a 7 percent boost to nearly 600,000 passengers. In January, Swedavia’s passengers reached roughly 74 percent of the pre-pandemic levels in 2019.
January saw Stockholm Arlanda Airport and Göteborg Landvetter Airport leading in overall passenger growth, while Kiruna Airport topped regional airport growth.
Jonas Abrahamsson, the president and CEO of Swedavia, commented: “In January, demand for air travel was stable, despite uncertainties such as the global situation, economic uncertainty and personal finances. International travel continued to increase during the month, which mainly benefited our major airports but also Luleå Airport. Domestic travel, on the other hand, continues to show a weaker trend. Although there are significant uncertainties, we expect increased traffic and a greater range of routes at our airports later this spring and during the summer. At the same time, there are signs that the economic situation will improve somewhat in the period ahead, which is also likely to increase demand for air travel.”
Stockholm Arlanda Airport Serves Over 1.4 Million Passengers
At Stockholm Arlanda Airport, over 1.4 million passengers flocked through in January, marking a 1 percent uptick from the last year. Here, international trips increased by 2 percent to 1.2 million and domestic trips by 9 percent to just under 200,000 passengers. The airport’s activity reached nearly 80 percent of what it was before the pandemic.
Götenborg Landvetter Greets Over 300,000 Passengers
Over at Göteborg Landvetter Airport, traffic surpassed 300,000 passengers in January, reflecting a 3 percent increase from January 2023. International travel notably climbed by 6 percent to 300,000 passengers, though domestic trips saw a 16 percent decline to just below 40,000 passengers. Göteborg Landvetter’s performance stood at 74 percent of its pre-pandemic passenger levels.
Kiruna Airport Leads Sweden’s Regional Airports With 23,000 Passengers
Kiruna Airport led the regional recovery, welcoming nearly 23,000 travelers. Visby Airport and Luleå Airport followed with significant growth in passenger numbers. In contrast, Malmö Airport and Åre Östersund Airport experienced the least growth during the same period.
Overall, the performance analysis of Swedavia’s January 2024 travel patterns underlines a resilient international sector and hints at the potential for an upswing in future travel engagements.
