Find Your Lost Stuff at East Midlands Airport: A Stress-Free Guide

Misplacing your stuff can be a real headache, but at East Midlands Airport, getting it back doesn’t have to be. Last year, the airport’s Lost Property Office collected an impressive tally of about 4,000 forgotten items, spiking up to 600 in the month of August alone!

Commonly Misplaced Things

It turns out that travelers often part ways with a pretty wide range of stuff – from gadgets like phones and tablets to the essentials – think keys, passports, and the dreaded wallet-gone-missing. And it’s not just the small things; clothing and luggage are also on the list.

Unusual Finds at EMA Lost Property

East Midlands Airport reports an odd mix of items left behind. It’s not just your regular umbrellas and books; passengers have forgotten cherished children’s toys and even pendants holding a loved one’s ashes.

And that’s just the start—EMA’s lost and found runs the gamut from quirky to downright bewildering. The airport has found a suitcase full of ginger nuts and digestive biscuits, another carrier brimming with salami, walking sticks, and even the odd set of false teeth. Other finds last year included drills, guitars, snooker cues, snow globes, an out-of-place steering wheel, and bikes.

Where Do These Lost Items End Up?

If you’ve left something on the plane or baggage claim, the airline or their baggage handlers can help you. But if you left your items in other airport spots, like the parking garage, check-in desk, or departure lounge, that’s a job for the Lost Property Office at East Midlands Airport.

The Lost & Found Process at East Midlands Airport

Here’s the scoop on what they do: the Lost Property Office logs every lost item digitally and stores them away safely. They’ll look after your cherished items until you come to claim them.

How to Retrieve Your Belongings

Need to get your stuff back? No problem. The East Midlands Airport Lost Property Office is all about making the process as smooth as possible. They’re keeping your lost items secure and ready for you, ensuring you can breathe easy and get back to what matters. After all, losing something shouldn’t ruin your day!

What Happens to Unclaimed Items at East Midlands Airport?

Despite the myriad of items managed last year—nearly 4,000—astonishingly, travelers only reported about a quarter of those as lost. So, what happens to these misplaced belongings?

The Lost Property department will keep items of lesser value, such as abandoned jumpers, safe for 30 days. Meanwhile, those with a heftier worth, like forgotten electronic gadgets, get a storage extension of up to 90 days.

Should these items linger unclaimed after their holding period, EMA ensures they get a new lease on life by donating them to local charities. Furthermore, the airport also turns over any unclaimed cash that finds its way to the lost property department to charitable organizations.

Lost Property Often Comes From Frazzled Passengers

Why do travelers leave such an eclectic array of items behind? Often, the holiday excitement bubbling over or the dash to catch a flight leads to distraction and forgetfulness. Then there are times when airport check-in nerves and security protocols can frazzle even the seasoned flyer, so something slips their mind.

“When people come to the airport, we understand some may be anxious or not concentrating, and this can often mean they mislay, forget or leave behind a surprising and wide range of items,” says EMA’s director for customer services and planning, Mike Grimes.

Prepare, Take Care, and Try Before You Fly

“My advice would be to be prepared, take care. When going through security, place different things like coats and electrical items in separate trays. There’s plenty of information available at the airport and on our website about security procedures and what can and can’t be taken through. We also offer Try Before You Fly sessions for first-time or nervous flyers, which hopefully will help reduce the chances of losing items while traveling through EMA.”

The Try Before You Fly service runs a number of free events each year to help people familiarize themselves with the airport. You can get more information on the program here or by emailing customerservice@eastmidlandsairport.com, with the subject line ‘Try Before You Fly.’

So, double-check your belongings the next time you fly from or via EMA. You wouldn’t want your prized possessions becoming part of EMA’s treasure trove of lost and found oddities—or would you?
